The Burk Family
In February, we were honored to partner with Adoption Journey Conference in awarding an adoption grant to the Burk family. Please read their story and join us in praying the remainder of their family home.
James and Heidi have been married since 1992 and have three children ages 22, 18, and 14. Following the birth of their youngest they thought their family was complete although in her heart Heidi had dreamed of more. Following a devastating job loss and a relocation to a new city for a new job God put adoptive families in their paths. They began working with the ministry Safe Families, and through this experience God was preparing their hearts for what He had planned next. They were contacted by their pastor about an orphan hosting program and for 16 days hosted a 10 year old girl from Eastern Europe. After Day 2 they felt that she belonged with them. Knowing she has 2 siblings (and now there is a possibility of a 3rd), they began the process of adopting all of them.
David Platt’s word rang true for them, “We learned that orphans are easier to ignore before you know their names. They are easier to ignore before you see their faces. It is easier to pretend they’re not real before you hold them in your arms. But once you do, everything changes.”
Today finds them completing paperwork and fundraising as they were told by their agency, MLJ Adoptions, that travel is generally expected in 6-9 months.
James and Heidi are both committed Christians and write, “we are still ‘relatively’ young and what better way to spend our life than living out the gospel by investing in children that need it most”. James is employed by Amazon and Heidi is blessed to serve at home.
