Sponsorship & The Mitchells

Hi. We are the Mitchell’s from rural Kentucky.

We have six children; four happen to be adopted. Three of the boys are three-years-old, which is as crazy as you might imagine.

We recently took our oldest two children (Abby 13 and Jonah 11) to Kenya and Uganda on a mission trip with Visiting Orphans. One of the highlights of our trip was getting to meet our sponsored child, Lucky Obama. Yes, that’s his real name!

Lucky has been a part of our family for the past year. Lucky is the same age as our little boys, another three-year-old! If you ask our little boys about their brothers, one of them will tell you he has a brother in Africa named “Wucky Obama”. He even told his preschool teacher, “Mommy went to Africa to pick up Wucky Obama.” Oh how we wish that was true. Lucky was abandoned because he was thought to be developmentally delayed. He couldn’t walk and seemed very behind. Nellie from Haven of Hope took Lucky in, and she arranged for him to see a doctor and have medical tests ran. The conclusion to the testing was this: Lucky was not delayed; just malnourished. Nellie started feeding him properly, and 3 months later he was walking and running.

So does child sponsorship matter? Does the $35 I send every month make a difference? Absolutely. It matters to Lucky Obama. And that is enough reason.
